For The Pups: Summertime Fruit Ice Lick

While we were on vacation in the Outer Banks, my mom came up with the idea to make "ice licks," as we named them, for Oats to stay cool and have fun.
I should mention that Oats is obsessed with fruit. She loves bananas, watermelon, strawberries, blueberries, and we recently  learned that she goes crazy for pineapple too. Yes, these fruits are safe for dogs. As far as my research goes, grapes and pitted fruits (and tomatoes, if you're in the small category of people that remembers they're fruit) are the only unsafe ones for pups.

The cool star shape came from a small kid's beach pail we found at the rental house, but you could use anything. The pail was slightly flexible, making it easy to get the ice out. I wouldn't recommend using something hard like a bowl as it may be more difficult. When we took it out we just placed it in a larger bowl or pan so she didn't push it all over the floor.

We made different variations each day. The one pictured below has just strawberries and watermelon. We had some strawberry pieces sticking up which made it a little more fun.
The idea was pinterest-inspired from this photo...
...but we thought fruit would be better for Oats than toys. I think she approved.

If you don't want to make a huge ice block, you can do something similar with just one piece of fruit in each section of an ice cube tray. Fill each with water, freeze, and you have 16 nutritious, hydrating treats within a few hours.

Hope we inspired you to try this for your pup this summer! Stay cool!
